09 Oct L’extraction de l’huile d’Argan, un processus fastidieux et complexe
The production of Argan oil goes through complex stages and requires invaluable know-how.
The difference between cosmetic and food Argan oil lies in the process of "roasting" the argan nuts, a crucial step. Indeed, the almonds are slightly golden and roasted, if necessary the oil loses its antioxidant properties. In addition, the hazelnut aroma will be more pronounced and less pleasant in the mouth.
As for the cosmetic Argan oil, the argan nuts are crushed using a cold pressing process to ultimately obtain a golden yellow oil. It does not have a nutty smell, just a slight smell of almonds which will disappear very quickly on contact with the air and the skin.
The extraction of the oil is done in eight stages facilitated by machines relieving a little the tedious work of the women and giving a very high quality oil.
1-The choice of argan trees
The best argan trees are found in the prefectures of Agadir-Ida Outanane, Taroudant, Tiznit, Tafraout and Essaouira. The trees grow there naturally and wildly in harmony with their environment. In addition, these argan trees are found in the hills and in the mountains where there are no pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
2- Harvesting the argan fruits
When the fruits reach maturity, they are harvested by the Amazigh in the argan groves. The fruits are then dried in the sun. Another easier method but not recommended for a quality oil is to have the hard shells digested and then rejected by the animal afterwards.
3-Pulping
Pulping consists of mechanically separating the dry pulp from the argan nut. When removed, it results in a solid nut.
4-Crushing
To crush this nut, it is placed on a stone and opened using another stone. This operation is very sensitive and requires great skill and invaluable know-how. The argan nuts therefore appear in the form of a thick seed with a bitter taste. This step is manual, traditional and requires long hours of work.
5-Grinding
The extraction is done automatically by a machine by pouring the kernels into a funnel. The automatic process gives the gangue in one circuit and extracts the Argan oil in another circuit. The oil is then stored.
6- Decanting
Once the oil has been extracted, it goes through a process which consists of letting the oil sit for 7 days to remove suspended particles. The result is a consistent, limid, transparent oil, according to specifications that meet the international quality standards.
7-Filtering
Argan oil is then filtered through a machine giving a 100% pure and natural oil, without additives or deodorants, transparent, limpid with a very slight odor which disappears quickly on contact with the skin and air. Storage is done in appropriate stainless steel containers which is the most appropriate to preserve 100% the Argan oil virtues.
8-Bottling
Subsequently, the argan oil is bottled in a semi-automated manner. Packaging is done in tinted or transparent glass bottles meeting the norms in force.
